Filters

Overview

Filters allow you to exclude groups of respondents from crosstabs, allowing you to analyze targeted groups. Most variables can be used as filters in crosstabs, but specific Filter variables can be created prior to making a crosstab in order to speed analysis. For example, let's say we only wanted to see respondents who were women over the age of 25.

Logical Expressions

To build this filter, we need an expression like this:

Gender = Female AND Age ≥ 25

In the variable editor, we would do the following:

  1. Select the Variable Category (”Demographics”) using the Category list on the upper left
  2. Select the Variable (”Female”) just below it
  3. Select the Operator ”Equal to (=)”
  4. Select the Value ”Female” from the Value list
  5. Click [Add to Definition] to move this Variable/Value expression into the expression window
  6. Click "AND"
  7. Select the Variable Category
  8. Pick the Variable (”Age”)
  9. Select the Operator ”Greater than or Equal ≥”
  10. Select the Value ”25-34” from the Value list
  11. Click [Add to Definition] to move this Variable/Value expression into the expression window
  12. Click OK

Once our filter is made, we can use it in any crosstab. Our unfiltered crosstab contains 100% of our respondents, and looks like this:

When we add the filter, only 20% of respondents are included, and our results adjust accordingly:
